Devotional Habakkuk 1:5

Pastor Brian’s “Every So Often” Devotional

(Habakkuk 1:5)  “Look among the nations and watch—Be utterly astounded!
For I will work a work in your days Which you would not believe, though it were told you.”

The prophet Habakkuk is informed that God is going to do something that will blow his mind.  God is going to work in such a way as to confuse and confound everyone.  The work in question is that God was going to discipline His people Israel at the hand of the Babylonians (Chaldeans).  What was astounding was the idea that God would discipline His people’s waywardness at the hands of a people that were even more sinful and wicked!

Just as God said, Habakkuk freaks out at this idea and asks how this is even remotely possible.  You half expect God to respond, “I told you you wouldn’t believe Me!”

One of the most difficult situations we can face is when God corrects our sin and rebellion using people that we know to be sinful and rebellious themselves. It’s hard to focus on letting God accomplish His corrective purpose in us when it is so easy to complain about the corruption of the tools He is using.  Like Habbie, we must find the place where we can say, “I will stand my watch, and set myself on the rampart, and watch to see what He will say to me, and what I will answer when I am corrected.” (Habakkuk 2:1).  Don’t miss the message because of the messenger!
